From Darkness to Light: The Inspiring Journey of Karna Kumari, India’s Blind Women Cricketer
“Karna” — The Girl Who Found Light Even in Darkness
Sometimes, life is not seen through the eyes —it’s felt through courage.
In a small village of Andhra Pradesh, walking along the mud-covered paths, a little girl named Karna Kumari had no idea that one day, her name would shine in India’s Blind Women’s Cricket Team. She could not see — but she dreamed. Dreams woven through sounds, sensations, and the whisper of the wind.
She studied in a government school in Visakhapatnam, where every child learned not just to see — but to feel. That’s where, for the first time, a bat was placed in her hands. At first, recognizing the ball’s direction just by its sound was difficult. But each time she picked up the bat, she learned to listen carefully —
to sense where the ball was coming from, and swung it right toward the sound… where the world said — “She can’t see anything.”
Gradually, cricket became more than just a game for her —it became a faith. A faith that perhaps, even without eyes, one can still reach the destination.
There is a simplicity in Karna’s game. She doesn’t shout or boast — she just plays. In 2025, when she scored 114 runs — not out — in a tournament,
the entire ground stood up and applauded. 👏Someone said,
“Look, Karna is catching the sound of the ball again.”
But in truth —she wasn’t just catching the sound, she was catching her destiny. Karna is the daughter of a farmer. The roof of her house leaks —but the roof of her dreams never does. When she was selected for the Indian Blind Women’s T-20 Team, her village witnessed smiles brighter than ever before. Her mother said —
“We thought she was just playing around,
but now I feel God sent her to show the world — through her game.”
Her real victory isn’t a trophy or fame. It’s the fact that she silenced every person who ever said —“What’s there in darkness?” Karna replied —
“Darkness never changes — only your vision must.”
Karna says — “All I want is to make sure that no other girl like me ever gives up on her dreams out of fear.” Sometimes, God takes away your eyes —but gives you vision. Karna is the living example of that vision —a girl who crafted light out of darkness.
Her name is not just Karna, it’s a lesson —
“Those who truly desire their destination
will always find a way — whether they can see it or not.”
